TCDA congratulates Sergio A. Reyna, Jr. on the selection of his composition, “The Little Match Girl” (SSA) as the winning composition of the 6th annual Emily Crocker Emerging Composer Competition. This piece will be premiered by the MS/JH All-State Choir during the TCDA Annual Convention on Saturday, July 18 at 3:00 pm.

Sergio is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Music Composition at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.  It is said of Sergio that despite becoming hard of hearing at a young age, he has developed exceptional musical skills and a remarkable ear for composition and performance.  With over nine years of experience in choir, he has earned numerous accolades in both solo and ensemble performances, as well as in piano compositions.  A high-achieving student in his third year of college, musical excellence continues to drive his growth as a composer and performer.

The adjudication committee commented on the uniqueness of the text as well as the interesting piano accompaniment that creates great movement.  They also highlighted the “lovely and nice” melodic line.
